The Last Day of Class

Well - this is it! We just have a few things left to do. I've truly enjoyed getting to know each of you and look forward to hearing from you as you continue here at UGA.

1. Please turn in your final reflection paper

2. Walk around the classroom, we need to present our portfolios! Make sure to share your favorite projects.

3. We need to take a class picture.

4. I will walk around the classroom, watch every project and your presentation, I will select my most favoriate project in terms of graphic design and best presentation you made. These two people will receice prizes from me. Yeah!

5. Please make sure you fill in the "Final Checkout" sheet before you leave - with your portfolio address and your contact information in case I am unable to access your work. 6. I will finish grading by next Thursday - your grade will be available in OASIS immediately after I post them. Please let me know if you have questions about your final grade. Uploading Your Website

Please help me to complete the end-of-course evaluation first.

Assuming all parts of your portfolio are complete, you'll upload your website in class today following the directions provided in class. (see handouts)

If everything is complete and all links and images are working -- you'll leave your web address on the sign-in sheet before you leave class today. And then Wednesday is option for you.

Should you need additional assistance after today's class, make sure you come to Class on Wednesday. Or sign up for an appointment .

Showcase assignment: You will need to create a display for your work area for the Friday's showcase class. This can be a tri-board (as seen in our classroom), and/or food, or a PowerPoint Presentation, or worksheet/quiz, etc.

You need to walk though the whole class your project and specify one reason why students should come and view your projects -- so your display should be enticing.

I extended the deadline for your final reflection to this Friday, You will need to bring a printed copy of your final reflection to class.

Now is the time to take a few minutes to provide feedback on a classmate's Web-based portfolio. This is not the time to say "It looks great!" or "I can't think of anything I'd change". Your task is to give specific feedback that will assist your classmate in improving his or her project.

Today you'll prepare your course projects to be added to your web-based portfolio.

You'll rename documents and copy them into your portfolio folder in case two files have identifical file names.

You'll also save your Inspiration/Kidspiration projects as images and your resume as a .pdf.

After getting everything organized, you'll link to your individual artifacts/projects on the appropriate pages in your web-based portfolio.

You may want to go ahead and link to all of your artifacts or you may want to work on content and then add the artifact links as you go.

Remember to use this student portfolio as a reference for what is expected.

Also, continue to refer to the checklist so you know what is required for each page in your portfolio.

We do not have a final exam in this class - we have a final project: the web-based portfolio and a final reflection paper.

The purpose of the final reflection paper is to allow you the opportunity to reflect on what you've learned in EDIT 2000 this semester and to begin to think about how you will apply your new knowledge and skills in your future classroom.

Because the end of the semester is so focused on technical skills, it is important to recall the theories and ideas behind K-12 technology integration. While the reflection paper is not a research paper - it is a summation of all that you have learned this semester.

Before writing your paper, I recommend the following:1. Review the assignment description - plan to organize your paper around the specific questions that are asked - no more, no less.

2. Review the blog postings from this semester - they are more than just links to resources.

3. Review the readings that were distributed at the beginning of the semester.

4. Take the reflection assignment seriously - it is worth 10% of your grade and I am looking for a synthesis of what you have learned this semester.The reflection paper is due (in a printed copy) on Wednesday, April 26th at the beginning of class

You'll continue to add to it throughout the rest of the semester. This website will allow you to connect all of your course projects together so that you will finish the semester with your own web-based portfolio.

We're going to step away from this today and work at a LoTi level one as we develop an environment to showcase the work you have done this semester.

We will begin to build your website today, you'll continue to add to it throughout the rest of the semester. This website will allow you to connect all of your course projects together so that you will finish the semester with your own web-based portfolio.

Getting Images Ready for Your Portfolio

Over the next few weeks you will build a portfolio to showcase the work you have done in EDIT 2000. We will begin today by creating a menu page and learn how to edit images for your autobiography page.

We will use Fireworks, a photo editing tool to prepare pictures and menus for your web-based portoflio. It allows you to manipulate images and create images for the Web. (See handouts)

Don't forget to take a look at some of the portfolio samples from past classes to get some ideas.

You may want to download the 30-day trial of Fireworks and Dreamweaver. It is expected that you work on some of this outside of class. The following places on campus also have Dreamweaver on them: 228 Aderhold, 216 Ramsey Center, and the Student Learning Center.

Last week we looked at the major components of the student portion of the WebQuest. Today, we'll spend a few minutes looking at the teacher portion.

Today you'll be given most of class time working on your WebQuest -- by Wednesday's class it is expected that you will be at least halfway finished with your entire WebQuest ( Introduction, Task, Process and Evaluation on the student's page). We will be working in pairs on Wednesday to conduct peer reviews of your WebQuests and the rest of time will be given working on the project. Wednesday will be the last for your WebQuest project.

So, how do you get started writing your own WebQuest? The WebQuest Design Process flowchart created by Tom March is a great way to keep track of what you are doing.

Now that you have an idea for content flow how do you put it all together into a web-based learning activity?Bernie Dodge has put together a large list of templates you can use to create your activity.

Choose the appropriate template from the WebQuest Design Patterns page. You should download the student page only. You can access the template for the teacher page here.
Save the template to your portfolio folder in your key driver before you begin work-- rename the student's page into student.htm and teachers' page into teacher.htm
Open your student page (student.htm) in Word. You may need to choose "all files" in the Open Files window in order for Word to know to open an .htm file.

What is WebQuest?

What exactly is a WebQuest? What are its main characteristics? What are your initial reactions to WebQuests in terms of teaching and learning? What advantages and disadvantages do you see in teaching with WebQuests? What standards in your content area lend themselves to WebQuests?

Viewing exemplary webquests is a good way to get started on your own. Go to the main WebQuest page and click the words "Find WebQuests" on the left navigation bar. Using the Curriculum/Grade Level Matrix (in the middle of the page), spend a few minutes viewing 2 or 3 WebQuests in your content area. You can also see interviews with teachers who have used WebQuests here.

Hopefully, you're beginning to formulate an idea for a "hook" for your own WebQuest. It may be related to work you have already done in our class or work you are currently completing in other courses. It could even be something completely new in your content area. After you have some ideas together, review the WebQuest assignment so that you are clear on what is expected. Before Thursday's class, you'll want to identify your WebQuest topic. Use this website to help you in the selection process.

Generally, a good WebQuest topic should have some inherent complexity, such as controversial issues, multiple perspectives, unknowns, etc. The topic needs to have your students take information in and transform it, using their own judgement and creative problem-solving techniques -- a LoTi level 4 or higher -- the learning should be authentic. Certain topics tend to lend themselves more to the WebQuest format than others.

By 5:00 PM on Tuesday, March 21-- please email a response to the following questions related to your WebQuest, this is counted as a part of your "Mini-project and reflection assignment". Make sure to include your name in the body of the email. I will provide you with feedback about your topic choice via email before class on Wednesday, March 22nd. Your email need to include your respond to the following questions:

1. Briefly describe your topic
2. Why did you choose this topic?
3. How will your WebQuest be tied to Georgia or national curriculum standards?
4. How will web resources play an important role in your WebQuest?
5. How will your WebQuest require students' deep understanding or higher-level thinking instead of mere comprehension?

iMove Showcase

Before showcase: Finalizing your work. Go to File > Sharing in the iMovie HD workspace, make sure the Quicktime icon selected, and then choose Web streaming and CD-based to save two different versions of your project. Turn in the web streaming version into the dropbox and turn in the CD version to me. : )

Movie showcase today! You and your team members will do a short introduction to your movie before screening your movie in class. Each team will have 5 min to introduce (1~2 min) and screen your movie (~3 min).

Editing week

I hope every group has your project going very well.

This Monday and Wednesday is for editing your film. The editing studio is in 602 E. It has five editing machines in the room. Also you can choose to use the two editing suites in the RM 616 our classroom. When you come out of the elevator, turn right and turn right again when you are at the corner. The RM 602E is the first door you could see on your right.

If you want to add sound track to your movie, the machines in 602 E have microphones but the machines in 616 don't, so if you are working with the machines in 616, you need to go to OIT to check out the microphones yourself.

You could still continue filming on Monday! But I strongly recommend you finish filming as soon as possible. Wednesday's class is required for editing. And this Friday, we will have a showcase. I am looking forward to watching all the movies.

For editing, the only thing you need to use is the footage---the tape. And you could return your camara to OIT office when you start editing.

Important: If you don't have enough time for editing at class, you could reserve from OIT the room for the editing suites by yourself, so you can work outside class time.

1. Your PowerPoint game assignment is due today. Please turn in the electronic version of your game to the drop under the PowerPoint Game folder. Use your FirstNameInitial_LastName.ppt as the name for your file, such as h_fang.ppt.

2. Attentions: On Wednesday, we will have class at RM 233 downstairs at Aderhold Hall with Mr. Ron Baxley from OIT office to skills you will need to work with iMovie.. You can't afford to miss that. I will distribute footages at class on Wednesday as well.

3. Make appointment with your group members to film your movies. Also we won't meet at class on Friday, but you and your group members have to meet outside class to film movie during that time.

4. I have already reserved the editing suites next week for you. We will start editing on next Monday. Bring your footage to class and remember to return the DV to OIT office. You can also continue filming on Monday and edit on Wednesday. Remember your project is due on Friday. Usually two classes time is needed for editing. You will need to reserve the editing suite by yourself at OIT if you need to do editing outside class hours.

Remember the final submitted movie need to be about 3 minutes. A raw footage of about 5 to 8 minutes should be more than enough. Refer to iMove assignment for more tips on shooting.

Last day of PowerPoint Game Project

If you are not ready for peer review, then you will have 20 mins at the beginning of the class to continue working on it.
Find a partner!
If you and your partner are both ready, please come to get the review forms from me.
The review forms include two parts. Form #1 asks you to give suggestions and feedback for improvement, and Form #2 asks you to give the grade to the game. I will use the score as 10% of the final grade of the PowerPoint Game project. So be responsible.
You will use 15-20 mins to review the project and fill out the forms.
When you complete the forms, please give both forms to your partner.
Discussions with your partner are encouraged.

If your partner is not here, please use the electronic version of the forms and email it to him or her when you are done at class.

CMC Tour and Optional Class

Please turn in the printed copy of your newsletter at the beginning of class. Also you need to drop the electronic copy into the folder named after yourself under the Productivity Tool directory in the DROPBOX.

Addressing learning styles is important when designing activities to teach content standards. Inspiration and Kidspiration software allow an educator to do just that -- by addressing needs of visual learners. Technology also allows educators to respond to various learning theories - from behaviorism to constructionism. Today we'll talk about PowerPoint games: what they are and how they help students construct their own knowledge.

It's important to know a little bit of background on the PowerPoint games project before we begin. Dr. Lloyd Rieber - a professor in my department - wrote a paper on this very topic that is an interesting read. Please read this article after class today and post your comments to the web log by answering the question of why you think PowerPoint game can a constructionist Alternative to WebQuests.

Many EDIT 2000 students have created their own games and more and more K-12 classrooms are using PowerPoint games as a way to address content standards through constructionism. You'll want to view some sample games from the Homemade PowerPoint Games website and from student portfolios from previous semesters. After viewing several, you'll want to get started on your game. You'll need to look over the project assignment and complete the game outline sheet distributed during today's class - this is due at the beginning of class on Wednesday.

Let's watch a web-based tutorial on "PowerPoint Game" created by Seow Chong Wong.

Use a capital “OR” to yield either/or searches i.e. Silver OR Gold
To search a complete phrase in Google, put the phrase in quotes i.e. “There is no place like home”
Put “~” in front of a word and Google will give you sites on the word and also synonyms of the word. i.e. ~food ~facts. Google will search for food facts as well as nutrition and cooking.
If you get too many results, add more key to narrow the search

We had a great class time at SLC with Ms. Cohen. ERIC is a powerful search engine for huge and aboundant educational resources. To know how to use it well will highly sharp your research. At clas yesterday we learned to define the keywords for searching.

The first step is to write the sentence of the topic you are gonnna explore, and eliminate unnecessary words such as "the" "a" "and" etc. Copy and past the rest to the search input field.
Don't underestimate these little easy steps.

Normally we are using the advanced search function in Eric to type the Keywords as Author's name, SU subject term, in all text, etc. One nice thing about Eric is you are able to use thesaurus function to refine your keywork---using related terms to better your search. For instance, we could find "computer assisted instruction" is also in the family tree of "instructional technology", and using parent-teacher can provide you more results instead of using parent communication.

Information and resources in ERIC is not rigorusly evaluated, it can someone's master thesis, and usually we aren't able to have the idea of wheather it is a good theis or not. So pay attention to the validity and correctness of the information when you get them. Welsion Web is another small educational search engine, they have formal peer review or some other evaluation process before taking an article in.

When you are using Galileo off-campus, you need a password to access the database.

Now it is time for you to get started with your productivity projects. You can choose to download a template from Microsoft Office Templates Gallery and modify it with your own images and texts. Or you can use your own creativity to create your own artworks as well.

Brochure Design Tips:

1. Typeface

Use large font size for the title

Baseic principle is Easily Readable

Avoid using script or decorative (decorative) typeface for long blocks of text
Using use standard typefaces like Times, Arial, Georgia, etc.
Italics can slow reader

Using Contrast to direct readers’ attention

Weight Contrast
Size contrast
Color contrast

2. Illustrations

Use at least one illustration, art work or line drawing when appropriate on each page. Make sure they are relevant.

Use clip art because it's free from copyright restrict ions and feel free to modify clip-art to meet your needs.
Don't put boxes around your illustrations - they'll make your pages look cluttered.

Start to Work on your word project...

With the design tips and ideas in mind, and you are familiar with using Word program to:

1. Set up page properties
2. Format the text you type (Bolding, Italic, underline, etc.)
3. Insert and modify with text box
4. Search and insert clip art
5. Bullet a list as you type

You should be able to get into your work now.

Now that you have begun to build a foundation in learning theories, teaching strategies, state and national content standards, levels of technology implementation, , you have already had a warming-up activity of creating visualized instructions with Kidspiration software at this class. Today, you are going to learn how to use various tools: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to increase your productivity for class. Those are basic tool to which most teachers have access. At this class, we will help you to create printable materials such as newsletter, survey, and brochure using these tools to help you better communicate with your students and parents, even school administrators.

Use the link to the productivity tools project description to get the specifics on the projects you will be expected to create. Before you begin working on your materials, you'll sit in a small session on using templates to streamline your work. Offices Suite itself provides various templates both local and online for your use. You can download the templates, make revisions, and create your own projects on it. You are also welcome to create your projects from a blank word document for instance, if you can't find appropriate templates.

In the following classes, you will be guided to learned some "advanced" skills of working with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Your understanding of learning theory and technology integration is really starting to come together. You are learning that technology is not used in K-12 classrooms just to make learning more fun. Technology tools can be used in conjunction with good teaching strategies to address various learning styles and student needs.

One goal of this class is using technology to create different learning activities in order to satisfy learners with different learning styles. Today we will be looking at visual learning software -- Inspiration and Kidspiration.

Both tools allow PreK-12 students to see a concept and its connecting themes and ideas. (Knowledge, brain as a web) Kidspiration program is created for K-5 learners whileInspiration is created mainly for learners from 6 grade to adult. It allows users to create concept maps, webs, and diagrams to improve comprehension, clarify thinking, and organize ideas. Because of the different target audience of these two programs, there are some difference in the software’s interface design and functions.

Curriculum Standards

Technology integration aside, how do teachers know what to teach? How do they know what students should learn? Every state has standards and every content area has national standards. There are even standards for technology integration. Georgia is transitioning from Quality Core Curriculum Standards (QCC) to the Georgia Performance Standards. You'll want to become familiar with the state standards for your content area and grade level.

You'll also want to be familiar with the ISTE standards for technology integration -- this course, and all of your projects, are based on these standards.

For Wednesday

1. Print a copy of the standards for your subject area/grade level.
2. Based on your standards, type a response to the following questions. Bring a copy of your standards and your typed response to these questions to class on Wednesday.

You read an article on Monday about "Weaving Technology into Teaching". What have you experienced as a K-12 student that would exemplify that weaving? What knowledge do you currently have about teaching and learning? About what technology integration looks like in a classroom? What technology skills do you already possess?

We will be working in a "dual platform" lab this semester. You'll learn to use both Windows and Macintosh machines. You'll find that they are very similar - once you test drive them both.

It's important to set up an organized file structure on any storage device - from a 3-ring binder to your usb drive. We use two main folders in your usb drive for this course: an assignments folder and a portfolio folder. Everything you create in this course should immediately be saved to the assignments folder. If you are using your USB drive for other courses, you'll want to create folders for them as well. USB drives are easy to lose, so you'll want to make sure to have a Word document named "Open if found" saved to your usb drive - it should include all of your contact information.

For Friday's class, in order for Huaxuan to learn more about you (and to get a head start on one or our first projects) you will need to submit a professional resume. This is due at the beginning of class Friday - you should bring a printed copy to class and save a copy in the assignments folder on your USB drive. You'll want everything to look professional, so use a resume template .

The purpose of this course is to help you to explore the tools that can support teaching and learning in a P-12 classroom. As you learn about these tools you will focus on the educational processes that these tools support -- not the technical skills that you acquire. In other words, this is not a course about learning computer skills in isolation; it is a course that will encourage you to find appropriate uses for technological tools in the P-12 classroom.In order to find and document these appropriate uses of technology, you will work independently, in partners, and in groups to prepare educational activities for specific curriculum topics. You will play the role of a classroom teacher and use your content knowledge, understanding of teaching and learning strategies, and your technology skills to develop real applications for the various tools explored during the semester. Your final product will be a web-based set of activities to teach specific curriculum objectives.

The instructor for your EDIT 2000 is Huaxuan Fang. Her email address is fhx@uga.edu. Your "temporary instructor" for the week of January 9th is Gretchen Thomas. My email address is gbthomas@uga.edu.
